[edit] Biography
A stand-up, writer, and actor, Andrew Bailey was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia. He claims that he was never funny until, at the age of 12, he watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail thirteen times in one week.
He lived and worked at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in 2001-2002 and has led the Queen in procession... for approximately fifteen steps. In 2003 he moved to Toronto to attend the Humber College School of Comedy where he studied under Lorne Frohman, Joe Flaherty and others. While at the school he was nominated for the Phil Hartman Memorial Award. He also got his first taste of stand-up performing at Yuk Yuk’s and other Toronto clubs.
After returning to Victoria, he joined the award winning cabaret Atomic Vaudeville as a writer and performer. Notable characters include Woody Allen Jesus, Death, and the bipolar Ronald McDonald. He is best known, however, for his sometimes poignant, sometimes surreal comedic monologues.
He has written and performed two solo shows. Scrupulosity premiered at the 2005 Victoria Fringe Festival where it won Best Solo Show. A tale of a boy tortured by an obsessive religious nature, it toured Western Canada in 2006 and received generally positive reviews with Colin Thomas of The Georgia Straight calling it “wildly funny... one of the very best shows at this year’s (Vancouver Fringe) festival.” His follow up, Putz, premiered at the 2007 Victoria Uno Festival where it was the top selling show. The story of sexual shame as experienced by a young man ordered to start dating by a psychiatrist, it too received high praise from critics, with Naomi Lewis of See Magazine calling it, “...just about perfect.... It is impossible not to be swept up in Bailey’s humour, compassion, and honesty.” It is set to run at the 2008 Toronto and Vancouver Fringe Festivals.
Bailey moved to Vancouver early in 2008 to perform stand-up and write movies. He can be seen at local clubs and at Atomic Vaudeville.
